CEEQUAL on the Civil Engineer’s
Channel
At the beginning of December, the Civil Engineer’s
Channel, a CPD resource provided by NBS Learning
Channels, recorded a feature about CEEQUAL. It
includes interviews with CEEQUAL CEO Roger Venables
and with Perry Shard, CEEQUAL Verifier and Assessor
for Birse Civils.
The programme will be available to Civil Engineer’s
Channel subscribers from January. See www.thecivilengineerschannel.com/
to find out more.
New feescale for 2010
As every year in early January, we have revised
the CEEQUAL feescale for the coming year. The
new 2010 feescale is now available on the
Downloads page of the CEEQUAL website.

What is CEEQUAL?
CEEQUAL is the assessment and awards scheme for improving
sustainability in civil engineering and public realm
projects. It is being promoted by the ICE and a group
of committed industry organisations such as CIRIA, CECA
and ACE. Its objective is to encourage the attainment
of environmental excellence in civil engineering, and
thus to deliver improved environmental and social performance
in project specification, design and construction.
CEEQUAL celebrates the achievement of high environmental
and social performance in civil engineering and public
realm projects. Awards are made to projects in which
the clients, designers and contractors go beyond the
legal and environmental minima to achieve distinctive
standards of performance.
CEEQUAL:
- promotes improved sustainability in project specification,
design and construction
- demonstrates the commitment of the civil engineering
industry to environmental quality
- assesses performance across 12 areas of environmental
and social concern
- provides a checklist of appropriate action for project
teams.
CEEQUAL uses a rigorous points-scoring-based assessment,
which is applicable to any civil engineering or public
realm project and includes environmental and social
aspects such as the use of water, energy and land, impacts
on ecology, landscape, neighbours, archaeology, as well
as waste minimisation and management, and community
relations and amenity.
Benefits of CEEQUAL
Applicants for Awards report a range of benefits from
having their project assessed under CEEQUAL.
- Reputation-building and good PR
- including delivery of the applicant's environmental,
sustainability and/or corporate social responsibility
policies.
- Enhanced team spirit - developing
a positive "we must score well here" attitude
and rewarding teams that have gone the extra mile.
- Demonstrating commitment to the environmental
agenda - to clients, within the team and
the organisations involved, and to the industry as
a whole.
- Improvements to projects and best practice
- including whole-life costing, waste minimisation,
resource efficiency (materials, water, energy), and
reducing complaints and environmental incidents.
CEEQUAL Awards
A CEEQUAL Award provides:
- public recognition
- an independent measure of project performance on
a wide range of environmental and social issues
- encouragement and a target for project teams to
deliver high performance.
Awards are presented to all project partners at suitable
industry events. Projects that have successfully completed
their CEEQUAL assessment and have received an Award
are listed on the 'Recent
Awards' page.
A CEEQUAL Award for your civil engineering project
will identify you as an organisation that:
- measures and compares standards of performance
- respects people and the society in which it operates
- seeks to undertake its work in an ethical and sustainable
manner
- acts in a socially and environmentally responsible
way
- protects and enhances the environment
- is concerned about the major impacts of construction
on the environment and the earth's resources.
If you would like to register a project for
a CEEQUAL award, please read the 'How
CEEQUAL works' page, and then use the link on that
page to register your interest.
